"It's complicated."


I believe that they saw the Judeo-Christian ethos as foundational to the republic, but they wanted to ensure that people could maintain their own beliefs. So "yes", in a sense that they felt that the foundation of this nation was Christian, but "no", in that they didn't want a requirement for belief in Christiantity to be imposed.

"Simple" yes or no questions are rarely that.
