That's certainly the narrative, but still doesn't address the actual steps
taken against Russia. I don't dispute Trump has been hesitant to verbally criticize Putin. It's simply wrong to ignore tangible action, and the sanctions from earlier this month were substantial.
There is quite a lot of speculation as to why Trump doesn't use the bully pulpit more often. Sure, it's possible Putin has dirt on Trump. It's equally possible he sees a kindred spirit in another strongman. Similarly, he might find it hurtful to his ego that opponents claim he was helped in the election. Or maybe, like numerous presidents before him, Trump believes through his unique persona that he will be the one who can forge a diplomatic 'reset'. Maybe it's a mix of multiple factors (Trump is also hesitant to say anything less than glowing of Xi, Erdogan, and Duterte).
Regardless of the speculation, one cannot ignore the facts when making their argument.
