The tomb of the unknown soldier is one of several
Places I’ve been that left a life long impression on me. We went as high school students and were fortunate enough to attend the debriefing with a soldier after the changing of the guard and got to ask a few questions. I asked the guard what he thought about while he was on duty because the snot nosed, high school version of myself couldn’t get past the monotony of walking back and forth down a line 21 steps at time for 2 hours at a time. His response that it was truly an honor and he thought about all of those who would never have the opportunity to come home hit me like a ton of bricks. I think it was the first time I really thought about the real life consequences of war. Prior to then it was only something for textbooks and the other side of the world.
