Because there's a good chance they'll be refused entry at official ports.
Immigration hawks in Congress are trying to slow an already glacial naturalization process while cutting visas. It's done for a bunch of specious reasons ranging from fear to outright bigotry (they'll take our jobs, they'll just consume welfare, they're mostly dangerous elements, they'll dilute our national ethos). Anything short of "zero tolerance" is "amnesty," and nothing angers a segment of republicans more than the word amnesty.
Migrants make the trip because the US is a great place, they aspire to live in a country that respects individual freedoms, and depending on the country of origin, many are fleeing awful conditions. They're not going to leave their kids behind.
It's a shanda that migrants feel the need to cross in the middle of deserts & stuffed into shipping containers rather than through official ports of entry. And once here that they live in the shadows, fearing to seek medical assistance, report crimes to which they're victim, and participate fully in the American dream.
I'll never understand the hostility toward those who desperately want to be Americans. So desperate they're risking their lives to get here.
And the irony is that migrants align closely to republican social issues. A voting bloc ripe for cultivation if they didn't form such negative associations from immigration.
