Both frustrating decisions by Dole and McCain, to be sure

But one effect of the Trump presidency is to make the flaws of past politicians, in comparison, seem like virtues. I think it's fair to say that at election time, most politicians make choices of dubious ethical virtue: I'm old enough to recall the Willie Horton ads by George H.W. Bush.

But all of these leaders had virtues too that were evident in and out of public life. Trump has none.
