Here's my reasoning-


Imagine telling some ancient guy from 1000 A.D. "a man walked on the moon". I think he'd be like, "did everything change?", "does your society treat him like one of the gods?", "is it a huge celebration and national holiday?" And someone from today would be like, "well, no... but it was pretty cool." That's what I mean by "underwhelming", it just didn't really make a lasting human connection for most people at the highest levels, could be characterized as kind of "disappointing" in that way after thousands and thousands of years of people staring at the stars. That's TIC, but also kind of accurate imo.

But I do agree it was important in advancing technology and in the Cold War, maybe there are more important discoveries looming, I'm not against investing in it. And definitely agree re: leadership and large scale scientific projects.
