I think the people on the fence perceive the threat I described as
generalized beyond Hillary though, and apply it toward the left in general. Not across the board, but that's the way it leans. In the most abstract it's "should I be proud to be an American or ashamed?" Most I's in the contested states are on the "proud" side. That's super generalized and Trump himself is a different kind of shame, but he's certainly unapologetic, that's the broadest context imo. The same rift still exists.
But I agree a higher turnout could make that moot. And/or those same fence-sitters could say "he's gone too far", or "I like health care and securing social security more than MAGA" or a lot of other things.
Separately but related, am linking a video I watched last night I think you would find interesting- it's an interview w/ a guy John Gray who I find insightful- on populism, what he calls "hyper" or "alt" liberalism, and how they emerged from the centrist liberal positions of the last 30+ years. 51 min so don't expect you to necessarily have the time for it, but I think you would find it interesting- maybe agree some disagree some but it's the topics are up your alley of interest.
