Had never been to Oregon. Had done NorCal and Washington to Canada &

wanted to fill in the gap.

Did 4 days at Manzanita (tiny place on the ocean, pop 600) and 4 days in Portland. Did the Japanese Gardens (incredible) and the water falls (ditto). Oregon is a foodie heaven. Pok Pok is to die for (tho it looks like a dive).

Just finished a history of bars in America book. (America Walks into a Bar, Sismondo -- highly recommended). San Fran was a gay haven for a long time, but even there gay bars were targeted by the police. Gays tried Portland and Seattle as a way of escaping persecution, leading to some of the society layers you referenced.

Great trip. Just ordered a huge print to commemorate & remember our visit.
