There's an on-going controversy about conversions to Judaism.

All conversions have to be under the supervision of a Rabbi. The religious authorities in Israel are only accepting conversions supervised by Orthodox Rabbis as suitable for eligibility to emigrate to Israel as a Jew. This idea riles a lot of folks from the US and Canada. A friend told me it's not an argument over who is or isn't a Jew; it's an argument over who is or isn't a Rabbi. It probably will never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction.
