I know, I know, it cuts both ways, but it's not as simple and clear-cut as it sounds. So many health care workers, first responders, bus drivers, trash collectors, utility workers - all the folks keeping the world running who can't do it from home - have young kids. When you close the schools, you effectively remove them from the work force. I know that was the conversation between school and government leaders where I live - they tried to give a few extra days so the rest of the city could be as prepared as possible before kids had to stay home and remove so many essential parents from the workforce. Did NYC wait too long? I don't know, maybe, but their calculation involved days one way or the other. That was nothing compared to our national leaders who waited weeks and weeks - as much as two months - too long.
