Whether they trusted the state/party or not, they were terrified as hell of

Stalin and his regime and did what was asked because everyone knew crossing them meant a one-way trip to the gulag or the firing squad. From what I remember studying Russian history, there was a lot more fear than anything else. But that is a different way of running a country. That is “ruling” not “leading.” Night and day from us having a blowhard, narcissistic doofus who lies his ass off but no one outside his own party fears or even respects.
