Help me understand this.

Why has the George Floyd murder become strictly an issue of police brutality against African Americans perpetrated by white cops?

Nothing has come out that would at all indicate that this murder had anything to do with the race of the victim or the officer. It was simply a horrible person exploiting his power to murder another person. He’s been charged with murder and will pay for what he did.

Yet the response has been 99.9% focused on black vs white and how this is just another example of white cops hunting down innocent black people. And this is the message that is just accepted and universally circulated. I mean, that’s such a dangerous message to drill into the minds of everyone when it’s so obvious that that’s not something that’s happening on anything close to a large scale.

Think about it. There are black kids (and adults too) that are actually going to believe that white cops want them dead. That they’re in a perpetual state of danger. That’s what they’re being told when that’s so blatantly untrue. No wonder we’re having violent riots. How else do you respond when you believe people are out to kill you at all times?

I mean, there has been some wild stuff said by people with massive platforms.

LeBron is out here on Instagram asking “Why doesn’t America love us too?!” What kind of message does that send to young black kids?

Akil Mitchell is on Instagram literally advocating for violence against “the oppressors”.

This stuff is just truly insane.

And I say all this fully understanding that racism exists and people of color experience it in a variety of ways throughout their lives. However, using this incident as “proof” that there is extremely widespread systematic racism against black people seems so misguided and puts this dangerous thought process in people’s minds that does absolutely nothing to help the real issues of racism that could be worked on.

At the end of the day, this shines a light on police brutality, which is clearly an issue and has been for a long time, but police brutality has nothing to do with race on its face. Many police officers feel they can do whatever they please since they’ve got the badge. That’s an ego issue that oftentimes leads to brutality. That’s what we should truly be focused on in response to Floyd’s murder, which 100% of the country agrees was absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. Yet instead of having an issue that everyone can be unified behind the same cause, it’s turned into something that it’s not even about that is doing even more damage to the society and race relations that have already been getting progressively worse over the last several years.

Edit: And one more thing. So many of the tweets, IG posts, statements, etc. by celebrities, athletes, companies, organizations, etc. seem so ingenuine in nature. It’s a bunch of people that never mention anything about any of these types of issues suddenly jump on the bandwagon because that’s the cool thing to do now. This is a major issue on social media in general when it comes to a lot of different things, but to exploit THIS situation for personal gain or attention is just so lame.
