RS article explained further. I said that a few times in my posts about it. I did not take a position on the slogan, other than to say it’s not quite as “loony” as you and the other dumb dumbs are implying. It functionally means to change a “police state” culture where we rely on the cops to respond to any number of things (be it an allegedly fake $20 bill, someone on drugs, domestic or custody disputes, etc.) with military force rather than address the underlying problems. Two of the consequences are the real problems get ignored, and we create a culture where police — who should consider themselves members of a community there to protect and serve it — are trained to be, and view themselves, as soldiers responding to threats.

I’m not going to say “defund the police” is much more than a half-assed slogan, but there are underlying principles that should be explored. Reprioritizing funds is not crazy, it makes a lot of sense. Why are cities spending billions on police forces and arming cops to the teeth when the streets have literally never been safer, but millions are mentally ill, have substance abuse problems, etc.? There are probably better ways to spend that money and constructive ways to de-escalate situations rather than do what cops tend to do — escalate the shit out of them and turn even a report of a fake bill into a violent power struggle that results in a man being killed.

I don’t know why I wasted my time typing that other than maybe the hope that someone else will read it and get somethign out of it, but there you go.
