On this note, Texas has a similar record (link) with 116 life sentences for


drug possession. Possibly some were major traffickers and that was a factor.

When I was an undergraduate (just after the last ice age) there was a UVA student who took a bus to Texas and purchased, as I recall, something over a pound of marijuana to bring back to VA. He was arrested in Texas, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. I've often wondered what happened to that person, whether he was ever released, died or is still in a Texas prison.
