licensure. All most every other job simply requires someone who is capable of thinking critically, teaching themselves, and has the motivation to learn further skill sets.

However, overhauling college in this manner also means overhauling the entire American educational system, and many of the institutions of the American workforce. We would have to focus secondary and elementary schooling on being prepared to be an entry level worker regardless of field(i.e. less on specialized knowledge and memorization, and more on the basics of proficiently reading, writing, thinking, and doing mathematics), and recalibrate American industries to define clear entry level positions with a view toward identifying talent and ambition, and promoting internally. Doing so, would require most companies to do a far better job of defining positions and the skill sets required to obtain them. A structure like that would be more merit-based, however, it is likely class would continue to play a factor. Such a plan should also put the burden of paying for job-related educational courses on the employer.
