Elections and not about the people who vote for the party we work for, who do you think is happy about the new Texas abortion restrictions?

To me, this is kind of like the dog finally catching the car and not knowing what to do with it. Republicans have been churning out the religious right vote for so long by claiming to be pro life. It was borderline impossible to scare up democratic support by claiming that a politician was going to outlaw abortion because we all knew roe v wade was the law of the land. It didn’t matter what kind of restrictions someone wanted to pass, the constitution read that we have a right to privacy with penumbras and other legal shit.

Now that’s no longer the case. Now they have to put up or shut up. And that won’t play terribly well with the rest of Peoria. I’m sure republicans will try to campaign on Sharia law or some other scare of the week. And some dipshits will invariably buy into it. But I doubt most will. Abortion was the biggest cudgel the republicans had with the religious right to whack Democrats with and siphon votes from people who would otherwise be better served with progressive economic policies.

Pretty dark times for poor women in Texas, though. Time will tell who the electoral and fundraising consequences favor down the road
