Virginia's commission may be heading the same way too
The way the most recent maps were drawn it could actually go 6R-5D next year even though the GOP hasn't won a statewide race in a decade and the current delegation is 7D-4R. It's not clear that these commissions are much better than gerrymanders by the legislature because of how they're forced to compromise and trade favors for incumbents.
I'd much rather see algorithms just draw simple compact districts all across the country. Collectively I think that would be a gain of a few seats for Democrats, but you'd have way more competitive elections and cities and counties getting split less often.
