His joining the party would IMO betray his effort to change it.


Inside the party, he's slotted as just another liberal Democrat. As an Independent (and in super-blue Vermont), he has beaten Democrats consistently at the ballot box. Why would he align himself with a platform that has basic ideological differences with his own? He's run several times as a write-in–because he was getting no love from the DNC, and maybe didn't even want it–and still won.

As far as Sanders–and myself–see it, the problem is with the DNC, and his criticisms of the party would, I think, gain less traction if he joined the party. As an independent, he can both point out hypocrisy and corruption inside the party AND steer people to vote for Democrats and independents who caucus with Democrats. And doesn't it look better for Democrats that both of the two independent members of Congress caucus with the Democrats?

I just think blaming Sanders for anything misses the larger issues with the Democratic Party, and his joining them would blunt his ability to effect positive change within it.
