For the record, I'm a small (but non-zero) gov fiscal conservative
I opposed the ACA and think it is terrible economic policy. That's not what this is about.
This is about how the Department of Defense sets a budget. I'm sure you want more money for defense and less for everything else. How does that money get allocated? How many planes do we buy? Which weapons system is the best? Serious-minded people have to figure that out. John McCain has been leading the committee that does this work for a long time and talking to senior administrators in the Pentagon. Do you know what happens when he ultimately passes away from brain cancer? Someone who knows less about this process will take his place. And do you know what happens then? Special interests will have a better chance of achieving their goals because they will be able to "teach" this junior person what the best ideas are. This is how government works. You haven't the foggiest idea about any of that though.
This is about how we account for Social Security and medicare costs 30 years from now. How much will it cost to pay for the next generation of retirees? We're obligated to do that right now under current law. Do you want to wipe Social Security down to zero or are you counting on at least some money to pay for your own retirement? I wish these systems had been structured differently 50+ years ago, but they exist and we have to manage them and modify them over time. It takes bureaucrats to figure out how to determine these costs and it takes rational policymakers to determine the best route to take. Do you know what happens when we install an idiot with no experience onto a committee in charge of this? We get the status quo or we get policy that does more harm than good. Somewhere in the attached video Lindsey Graham answers a question about social security and puts together a well-reasoned argument about why means testing is a good way to make it more affordable. Do you think a new Breitbart-backed candidate can make a sophisticated policy judgment like that?
