the two most likely paths, although I admit I am fairly strongly against the "openly run college as semi-pro/minor leagues". I just see nothing but negative consequences from that. I appreciate that the UNC situation is but one example that exposes the mockery about some athletes needing to even pretend to go to an actual class. I'm sure this has always existed (although to varying degrees, no way the UNC example is the norm at every school), but up until today -- one could at least assume that in theory, some enforcement mechanism existed somehow for the most egregious examples. If this is truly out the window AND if you make universities just some form of open minor leagues - then you are truly changing the dynamic about some very basic assumptions related to universities. I know this is part of the point of what others are saying -- "these things have already changed so just accept them and find a way to work with it". I just think this would be a pretty bad and formally new line to cross with what we would accept as the proper function of a university in this country. I think some form of Door #2 is really the right path.
