Many schools already have off duty or specially assigned PD in them serving

as security guards. Why not allow these trained professionals to carry their fire arms while on duty? We don't think twice about letting them carry guns elsewhere while on duty, but we have a problem with it while in a school? It won't be a deterrent for every nut job, but I have to think some would at least think differently vs. going into a school where they know no one is armed. I think the suggestion of armed vets, retired police, etc. is more for cost savings of accessing a cheaper labor pool that is still highly trained if you need/want to supplement that existing security guard. I'm certainly not advocating teachers should be armed, but perhaps we should at least be open to those that are trained for a CCP be allowed to if they choose to. (my concern is teachers/staff getting pressured by administration to get a CCP and to carry for cost savings)

As for limited entrances, that's already the case. Since Sandy Hook all exterior doors are auto lock and you have to be buzzed in most if not all schools (this nut went in while others were going out as I understand it). Some schools, particularly rougher ones, already have metal detectors. Aside from being very expensive to put those in every school, and the time it would take to get kids in school, what are you going to do when someone like this just walks right on through? Do you really think any of these nut jobs will stop because of a metal detector? Not saying more schools shouldn't get them, but that seems like a limited solution at best.

I'm not suggesting that's all that's needed by any stretch, but I do think armed security is a very reasonable, effective, and immediate step that can be taken.

Like you, I found this meeting to be very positive (and definitely heart wrenching) and a sign that we may see some real solutions this time. It was refreshing to not just hear the two extremes, and hopefully is a very positive step. Trump deserves much of the bashing he gets, but I do think he was truly listening, empathetic, and wants to be able to show he got things done (even if it's just to stroke his ego).
