I imagine troops having to practice marching will not be pleased about it

That seemed to be the biggest outcry I heard from military people who were asked about it. It's a waste of time. All the time spent practicing marching is time wasted that could have been better spent doing anything else.

So regardless of the optics or the cost, the people doing the marching are likely going to be upset that they are wasting their time. Lowering troop morale for no reason doesn't seem like a good idea.
