Jersey gets a bad rap, but it's actually a pretty nice state for the most
part. The NYC suburbs are generally a nice area; the southern part of the shore has, contrary to stereotype, some of the nicest beaches in the US; while Camden is indeed an awful dump of a city, there are some nice areas around Philly too; etc. I guess it all goes to what you're looking for. Jersey is a diverse state that is mostly nice.
I have cousins who went Bama and have been down there many times....personally don't think you could pay me enough to live there, even if you included Tide season tickets. And believe it or not, I'd hang out with the NASCAR-loving "ROLL TIDE" crowd any day over upper class Southerners in places like Mountain Brook. Can't think of a demographic I'd rather not be around than that one.
