That Cambridge Analytica re-purposed their survey responses for political purposes. At some point people have to learn that once something is in the ether, it is always there, and might be used in ways you didn't expressly permit.

My intent was never to indict CA, or even Facebook. It was an observation that Facebook's own perception clearly did a sudden about-face. Up until very recently, they were aloof, dismissive, and a bit combative over these kinds of questions. Now, they've been on a media blitz, complete with rather scripted-sounding apologies. Zuckerberg is rushing to speak with Congress.

I think they've had an "aha" moment. One risk is that regulations may be implemented that destroy their biz model. If they can't monetize people's data, they need a new revenue model. And I don't think that's the biggest risk they may see. With all these new revelations about ways people's data can be misused as never anticipated, the marketplace may decide that the cost to individuals of how Facebook monetizes their data is too high.

They seem to me to see these possibilities as an existential threat, and are trying to get out in front of it.
