expanded on that which won't allow the kids to be detained more than 20 days while the parents go through the process (or unaccompanied minors). From the start of this latest "outrage" being pushed, I've said I leaned towards detaining the families together, but that requires a law to be passed allowing family detention (and would eventually have to hold up to judicial scrutiny), as well as additional shelters being built since we're already at 95% capacity (and yet we're already hearing the same voices complaining about considering housing them on military bases, in "tent cities", etc.). I've also said where I could see an argument made that housing them in family shelters a la the Superdome post Katrina, "tent cities" a la Cuban immigrants, etc. could be viewed as more "cruel" than a process that places these kids with family members or vetted foster families as "sponsors" after a short period of time. The court for Flores apparently thought that approach was more "cruel".

But don't kid yourself, the same voices telling you "Trump is cruel" without actually being honest and open about what solution they want and would accept, would be screaming to you about how "cruel" family detention centers were if that was the approach currently used. Releasing these families is the only acceptable solution to them, despite knowing full well how few will show up for court, knowing full well over 80% of them will be denied asylum by the courts, and knowing full well releasing them will only lead to even more families coming and kids being bought/rented to pose as families for crossing.
