It's a really strange phenomenom.

Until last year's terrible weekend in C-ville, I never would have imagined even having to make this distinction. Not in the US.

It does emanate from Trump and the realities of tribal politics. Whether or not Trump is a racist, he has energized the alt right, which is where politically motivated white racists live (I don't think the entire alt right is white racist, but if you are white and racist and politically active, you are almost certainly alt right). This need (IMO) to somehow stand by this guy leads to some Trumpies saying "he's wrong, I disagree with him, but this is Trump being his rash and off the cuff self and I'm moving past it - still support him ". I disagree with that, but can sort of deal with it. The other tactic is to just "whatabout" Antifa to death, and do everything possible to ignore the elephant in the room, which is the racism, which lives very clearly and openly on only one side. That becomes surreal, because I find myself in arguments that I wouldn't have ever expected in the US. IMO, people even very recently would have been too embarrassed to make these arguments so openly.

Which is what I think people mean when they say Trump has empowered and energized white racism in this country. It's more subtle than just calling him or his supporters racist.
