So it's not about giving access to censored material (although there's valid criticism to Google helping the gov't in their censorship efforts) but rather providing information on individuals about what they're searching for and even what they tried to search for to the Gov't powers that be. Given China's less than stellar record on human rights, you can see where that could lead to serious problems, and yes, torture for those found searching for items the Gov't doesn't deem appropriate. Which goes against the "do no evil" mantra, and a big reason why Brinn was adamantly against this for so long. Seems like now that he's no longer in a roll to stop it, Google is selling out that mantra in the chase for huge profits, and doing so very stealthily (to their other employees that remember just had an uproar about working with OUR gov't) by limiting those even knowing this was going on to a very small number of employees. One of the key people on the Dragonfly project recently quit in protest over what was going on, and I'm guessing is the person anonymously cited in that article.
