If one is concerned with attacks on the media as fake news, there needs to
be a wake-up call for journalists to get back to basics. Reporting facts that are cross referenced, not overly relying on anonymous sources, and not starting with the desired headline working backward to seek validation. I get that there is pressure to compete with the pace of social media, but slipping journalistic integrity poses a greater threat to trust in the press than a demagogue ranting. Those standards are what separate an outlet from a partisan blogger. This goes for Buzzfeed, but also other journalists who run with their reporting without independently verifying it. The healthy impulse is to introspectively challenge stories that one wants to be true.
From an outside point of view, Mueller has been running this professionally. His team has been working without leaks or comments despite incredible speculation in the media. This is the first time I know of that they've made a public statement outside court filings.
I wonder how much slower the board would scroll if we waited for facts before running with every bit of speculation bouncing around.
