It's on the verge of becoming the new fear mongering campaign.

Of course, the American system contains lots of socialism. That famously derided Tea Party protest - "govt keep your hands off my Medicare"; that shows how supportive of "socialism" Americans generally are - not many want to do away with Medicare. Even those bellowing about the evils of "socialism", particularly when doing it in a mob, which always becomes mindless, scream just as loud about any tinkering with their own favorite govt provided service. They don't realize they're using socialism to encourage fear of socialism.

I think of myself as a free market guy, but not an anarchist. And as a practical matter even ignoring humanitarian considerations, there needs to be a safety net for any society to endure. Even the most ardent Trumpies endorse socialism, with their defense of entitlements like Medicare, or when they applaud Trump's showy strong arm tactics in corporate boardrooms. They may deride California's initiative to dictate the makeup of public boards, but give full throated approval when Trump threatens boards for making economic decisions he decides to turn into public displays.

When he does that he is practicing socialism in its more authoritarian form. Somehow the Trumpies here who insist that's the only form of socialism applaud it when Trump does it.
