It's much more involved than that. People take risks with their own health

all the time - they smoke, they drink too much, they ride motorcycles (gasp - sometimes without a helmet!).

It's one thing if you are only risking your own welfare. It's another if you're risking your own kids' well being (little bit grey in terms of when govt should have the right to step in, but most of us agree that there is a point where govt can protect kids even from their own parents' bad judgement), but when you are also risking the health of others, then there should be no question. Public health should "trump" people's irrational fears and devotion to ancient myths and fairy tales.
