FOUND IT. "Lion's Blood" by Steven Barnes. I bought it at a big discount


because I recognized Steven Barnes, who has collaborated with Larry Niven on a number of books that I really enjoyed, including the "Dream Park" series and the 2 "Legacy of Heorot" novels.

The short review on B&N website says:
