I would recommend "America Aflame: How the Civil War Created a Nation" by


Goldfield. I suppose I've read a fair number of books about the Civil War, but I think this one provided me the most insight into the conditions you're talking about. It leaves off at the end of Reconstruction when the north lost interest and began to focus on the industrial revolution and westward expansion while the south contented itself with essentially rebuilding the antebellum power structure through the Lost Cause mythology and Jim Crow. Propped up, of course, by religion.
