I had some newspaper research to do for a project today for a building completed in 1974. Fascinating to see the progression of Watergate, but mainly struck by Republican Minority Leader Hugh Scott. He generally accepted Nixon's pleas of innocence, but called for full disclosure of all the evidence, testimony from key witnesses, and release of the tapes. It was because he took Nixon at his word. He read the testimony and asked those involved to testify.

Finally, as the evidence became clear, on August 7, 1974, Scott, along with Barry Goldwater and John Rhodes, the House Republican leader, went to the White House to tell the president that he had to resign.
