There is a fairly significant chunk of voters who agree it's improper but
are not convinced it warrants removing him from office. You can find a few of them here, in fact.
Republicans are in fact going to die on this hill and will find any excuse they can to not support removing him. It's unfortunate, but unlikely to change.
That's why this, IMHO at least, has always been about setting the stage for 2020. I'm not entirely sure they will even bother with a Senate trial after these hearings; they may just run a campaign on the abuse of power and the need to remove him from office by voting.
