I don't think that's true. I think it's more that Virginia's Democratic

base looks a lot different than other states and relies on turnout from educated, middle to upper-middle-class voters who would have been Republicans 30 years ago but just aren't down with the racism, bigotry, anti-intellectualism, etc. that defines today's Republican Party and thus voted for Obama and Hillary. Bernie is too extreme and a lot of those voters will have almost equal reservations about supporting him (but would be more than happy to vote for any of the other candidates other than maybe Warren).

I don't think it has anything to do with gun control measures that a bunch of downstate gun nut idiots lost their shit over.
