Of course we need more immigrants, and that's why we need real
immigration reform. the demagogues of the world (left and right) have made every conversation about immigration about border security or migrants or whatever.
I think everyone can agree that economic growth is a good thing. We also need it to fund our entitlement programs and grow into our every deteriorating capital structure (thank you again Donald and Mitch for the insane deficits we're running).
As a nation, we will also face a real demographic challenge in the not-too-distant future (we're already seeing it in pockets, particularly in smaller towns where there aren't enough people to even care for the elderly).
We need to make it easier for for the people we want here to come to this country, participate in our economy and ultimately become citizens and participate in our political system. A very simple start would be to unwind the H1B restrictions W put in place and Obama kept. We can and should become (again) the destination of choice for the world's most talented people. We're making things too fucking hard (and expensive) and now the skilled labor and the entrepreneurs are flocking to Canada (almost half the people in Toronto were born someplace other than Canada). Clearly immigration is easier to manage when you don't share a border with Mexico.
Unfortunately for the TomKs and other xenophobes of the world, many of these people won't be white and many of these people will not have grown up speaking English (which was the case for most European immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries).
This one should be so easy to start addressing- everyone agrees!
