I would assume that a protest of that size was to show solidarity with the shootings at Kent State, which was in early May of 1970. Many colleges and universities shut down for a brief period, even mine. What happened at KSU shook administrators pretty badly, so to avoid further possible unrest classes were canceled. Instead there were orderly protests outside on a beautiful day, and speeches by students and some sympathetic faculty.
