It would be a shame, but in a way the dynamic is understandable. For so
many years after the Civil war Virginia stayed as much in the past as it could. Even 150 years later Virginia and other states could not have a reasonable discussion about who or what deserved to be honored (The Confederate battle flag on your state flag? Seriously? Why not a Swastika on the German national flag?) and the difference between erasing an honor and erasing history. Of course people know the difference but chose to misrepresent things in order to perpetuate the atrocity of those honors. So the pressure builds until something explodes and goes too far in the opposite direction. Jefferson may be the victim of that. Damned shame, truly, but it could have been predicted.
