So my family would tell you that, right up until a couple of years ago
I didn't understand the desire to bury the flag, get rid of the statues.
I grew up in VA, it was normal. The 'stars and bars' was everywhere. I didn't think people that flew the flag were racist, in fact, I knew many that weren't.
Play it forward a few years... We have an honest dialogue about how people feel when they see the flag. When they see the statues. I start to think about things a little differently. My black friends fill me in on their side. We have a dialogue.
Play it forward a little further. The only people out there publicly defending the flag and defending the statues are the racists. If you're not in that camp, you should be out fighting Richard Spencer for sacrificing your symbol. Hell- even Lynryd Skynyrd has stepped back. Nascar has stepped back. I think a lot of people saw the flag, back then, as a symbol of regional pride, or something to that effect. There is clearly a lot more to it. I never thought about the statues.
The statues are gonna come down in most places. Last time I checked, there were more black people in Richmond than white. Why are you going to make them look at those statues if they don't want to? Take them down, re-erect them where people that believe in them can come and look. I don't give a shit. Hell, the city should sell them to someone to display elsewhere. I'm wondering what will become of Stone Mountain (I lived in GA for a while too). I'm thinking the state should just sell the land to a "preservationist".
Honestly, I'm just wondering what you guys are fighting for? Slippery slope? I get it, but founding fathers and Confederate leaders ain't the same. Doesn't mean the later didn't do the best they could, but they were on the wrong side of history, and they lost. Why the statues?
As long as the good guys aren't coming out to defend the statues, I'm fine with them going someplace else (like a museum). Times change, man.
