The meaning as I see it is that they should be seen to matter as much as


Everyone else’s and the perception (and imo obviously the reality across most of the US’s history) is that society does not act like this is the case. I can see some room for debate as to how much the police brutality issues are the result of this as opposed to a wider problem within American policing but that is what I believe the phrase represents.
