He and his campaign should get political credit for tapping more deeply into the thick vein of populism -- a big part of 2016 and still thriving today. But that is different than trolling as a distraction. I'd say the same about this latest comment. Every indication about him is that he believes what he says -- as opposed to some strategically played media distraction technique. It may be that he is so relentless with this crap that it sometimes has the effect of taking attention away from other larger issues, but I think it gives too much credit for some kind of political savvy to think this is really his goal.
