The White House response has been spectacularly bad

on every level. It has made the real covid situation far worse than it needs to be, and from a PR standpoint it has made them look incompetent and ridiculous to anyone but their cult members. And it’s well established that trump could shoot someone on 5th Avenue without losing the support of his cult, so he doesn’t need to appeal to them.

I don’t get it other than he’s stubborn and not very smart.
