I think it's a necessary societal consequence of so many people staking so much of their hopes and dreams, as well as their personal self-worth, on the validation offered by the election of national level officials whose election and grip on power, almost by definition these days, relies on increasing polarization, intentional or not, of the populace
You want to know one of the few politicians I kind of admire these days? Tim Kaine. Not because I necessarily so much agree with his core beliefs, but because he does not seem inflexibly adhered to the national liberal narrative and Democratic platform. He has positions, or at least leanings, that are more driven by his status as Virginian and as a member of his community and his church. Which of course is why he will absolutely never go any further on the national stage than he has already gone.
