Our criminal justice system is basically a six degrees of separation game
where most everything can be traced back to the drug trade in some way. Millions of people have been incarcerated for possessing or selling drugs alone, but even other types of crimes tend to be linked -- a large percentage of property crimes are committed by drug users, violent crimes -- particularly homicide and assault -- are often gang-related, etc. Financial crimes often relate to laundering drug money, and so on. So yeah, if you're from the part of town where half the people you know are mixed up in the drug game, there's a much higher chance you'll end up in jail. And once you're in "the system" your life is pretty much fucked for the rest of it, even if you only do a small amount of time.
