I wonder about that, too, nowadays anyway. The Marines' mission has changed


pretty significantly in the past 60 or 70 years. When my dad was in the Navy in Korea, Marines were onboard as a security detail. His cousin, who was a Marine made amphibious landings in Korea, something the Marines have NOT done since that war. Right now, what are the Marines other than specialized infantry, as I heard the Commandant discuss years ago when the topic of a new amphibious lander was before Congress. He was opposed to it as unnecessary.

Frankly, it seems like you could reorganize all the branches. I know there are traditions and emotions involved. Mission and cost should be the primary consideration.
