that says it still wasn't secure with that feature. There was an audit of the presidential race though, if they hand counted the text on the votes without the scanner it would be accounted for.

Forgetting this election, it sounds like there does need to be a fix with the machines and there would be bipartisan support for it. Numerous articles and reports, Warren/Kloubacher letter, last time it was 60% of Clinton voters that believed there was tampering with the machine tallies. If this one was the "most secure election in history" you can only take it as previous elections were less secure, not that this one was airtight as it should be.

Officials tell voters to verify their selections on a paper ballot before feeding it into an optical scanner. But the scanner doesn’t record the text that voters see; rather, it reads an unencrypted quick response, or QR, barcode that is indecipherable to the human eye. Either by tampering with individual voting machines or by infiltrating the state’s central elections server, hackers could systematically alter the barcodes to change votes.

Such a manipulation could not be detected without an audit after the election. Georgia plans to audit just one race on this year’s ballot.
