like I don't in general have a problem with "affirmative action" type programs, preferences, etc. to try and overcome some of the obstacles we can't deny have been in place over decades.

It gets a bit slippery when you try to mandate outcomes rather than opportunity, or when you assume the outcome you don't like is due to racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. Or when you say a specific spot must be filled by someone that checks a certain box which has nothing to do with determining their ability to do the job.

For example, there is nothing wrong IMO with the NFL telling teams you have to interview 1 or X number of minorities for coaching positions (because we do have a history of refusing to interview such candidates), but it becomes a different story when you tell them they will lose or drop down in draft picks if they don't check a specific box when hiring. The first requires them to open their minds to the opportunity given, the latter dictates what the outcome must be in order to avoid punishment. Replace that box with "must be a white male" and it would never be tolerated.
