Constantly preparing for war and, obviously, war itself are terrible for the human psyche. We send our forces off to face the worst of human nature and expect them to just leave it behind.

Also after you’ve experienced the horrors of war in places where everyone hates you, it’s only natural to question who/what you are really fighting for along with resenting the people who sent you there.
