I gather that it really comes down to common practice in the case of impeachments of anyone other than a sitting president - president pro-tempore of the senate presides.

Roberts declined to preside without comment, but he is not obligated. His job legitimately is to keep the SC out of politics whenever possible. The judiciary OTOH has no real role in the impeachment process. Unclear to me that picking a circuit court judge is allowed. The link does a pretty good job of explaining why the Chief Justice has to step in with impeachment of a sitting president, but not in other circumstances.

Impeachments are completely political by their nature.
