Echoing a lot of what I see below. I respected and liked Dole, McCain,

Romney, Kasich, Hogan and a number of others, but still couldn't / wouldn't vote for them for a national office. Why?

1) In order for any Republican to become a national figure, they have to embrace the base, and what the base believes. So I'd like Romney, etc. up until they ran for president and had to start spouting the religion and 'family values' stuff. And for "Family Values", I just hated the hypocrisy there.

2) Lack of ideas. The solution to EVERY issue is "Cut Taxes". Bush v Gore, early in the election. "What are we going to do with the budget surplus?" and Bush / Republican answer was "That money belongs to the American people. We should cut taxes!" Never mentioned reducing debt with it. Then, later in the election as we hit a economic slowdown, the Republican answer was "The economy is weakening. We need a tax cut!" So strong economy = tax cut and weak economy = tax cut. And somehow the defense department always needs big increases.

3) And while the people I've listed HAVEN'T been ardent Trump supporters, I have become a single issue voter. That issue is (phrased somewhat facetiously) "Do you want King Trump?" and my answer is a resounding no. Too many Republicans publicly support that. So I vote against the party, even in cases where I might admire an individual.
